Adult Sunday School Classes
At Highland Park Baptist Church, we believe that learning together is an important part of Christian growth. That is why we set aside an hour every Sunday for the entire church to grow through learning. Recognizing the diverse spiritual life of our congregation, we have many adult classes that cover a wide-range of topics and age groups. We have classes for senior adults, for new members, and for persons interested in pursuing contemporary theology. In short, there are classes for everyone.
You will find some basic facts about each class, along with a brief description of what the class is studying and its approach to the material. It is impossible to capture the flavor of a class in a single paragraph; but, perhaps this guide will help you find a place to begin exploring. All our classes provide support and fellowship to their members.
And, that is exactly what we hope you will do: explore. Learning about God is an exciting journey. Our goal at Highland Park is to be co-learners with you as we all journey together. Look around, find a class that fits where you are right now in your journey, and jump on board. Become part of this thinking, feeling, healing community of faith.
COLEMAN’S CORNER
Jim Eskew - Room 230
Fellowship and discussion of World and Biblical issues both present and past for couples and singles ages 40+.
COLLEGE/GRAD STUDENT/YOUNG ADULT
Emily Yeager - Burchette Room
The road of faith and discipleship takes an interesting curve once a person enters college, graduate school, and especially the young professional world. Long-held traditions and values teeter between relevancy and renewal and, as a young adult begins to find his/her own voice in the world and in the church, it is important for them to find support, encouragement, and conversation at this unique stage in the journey. This class endeavors to answer questions and ask more questions about God, Jesus, Christianity, and the church as college students, graduate students, and young professionals make transitions in their faith pilgrimages. This fall they are studying The Gospel According to Hollywood by Greg Garrett.
CONVERSATIONS
Keith Cranford - Room 219
Conversations will be studying two books this fall. Beginning in September we will be studying Philip Gulley's
If the Church Were Christian: Rediscovering the Values of Jesus. This conversation will center on examining Jesus' ministry and how the church has (or has not) followed his teaching and how we can do better. This study will be followed by Richard Stearns' The Hole in Our Gospel. In this book Stearns, president of World Vision, examines what is missing in a gospel that focuses exclusively on eternal salvation.
CROSSROADS
Larry Lake/Michal Hubbard - Room 203
A multigenerational presentation and discussion format class that covers a variety of topics.
This fall they will study God is Not One by Stephen Prothero.
DISCIPLESHIP
Anita Tyler - Room 220
Growing up – that’s the topic of the Discipleship Class for the fall of 2010. What does it mean as individuals and as a community of faith to fully grow up “to the nature of Christ”? We’re framing our study with the help of Eugene Peterson’s book Practice Resurrection, a beautiful and challenging study of the book of Ephesians, Paul’s letter to his former congregation in Ephesus. As always, the class is a discussion class, perfectly adapted for this fifth and final book in Peterson’s series of “conversations” in spiritual theology. What’s a blessing? How do you wear the name “saint”? Come and join us! All saints welcome!
DISCOVERY
Roy Kimble/Bill Crawford - Room 200
The Discovery Class will be studying the curriculum from Smyth & Helwys Publisher. In September, we will be discussing the theme of “Trusting God” through the eyes of Elijah and the scriptures of I and II Kings. In October, the theme shifts to the “Stewardship of Time” as we explore certain aspects of Ecclesiastes. Old and New Testament passages will help us ponder “War, Peace and the Bible” with studies from I Samuel, Romans, Isaiah and Luke. Advent starts with the last Sunday in November with our class looking forward to a “Christmas Vigil” with texts from Galatians and Matthew. We welcome all to join us to ‘Discover’ how scripture applies to the way we live and how we are to share God’s presence in our lives.
